The Board is represented by nine members whose profiles are presented below.
Professor E.A. Elebute is one of the founders and Chairman of the Company. In addition, he is the Joint Medical Director and Consultant Surgeon, Lagoon Hospitals. He holds the following qualifications: MA, MD (Trinity College Dublin), FRCS (Edin), FRCS (Edin), FWACS, FMCS (Nig). Professor Elebute has been involved in the Nigerian healthcare industry for over 45 years. He has been awarded the CON (Commander of the Order of the Niger) by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Professor (Mrs) O.W. Elebute is the Vice-Chairman of Hygeia, joint Medical Director, Director of the Health Assessment Clinic and Consultant in Internal Medicine, Lagoon Hospitals. She holds and MB.ChB and MD from Birmingham University, UK. Professor Mrs. Elebute has been involved in the Nigerian healthcare industry for nearly 45 years. She did extensive research and teaching at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos before moving into the private sector as co-founder of Hygeia Nigeria Limited.
Mr. E.O. Oredugba is the former Managing Director of African Alliance Insurance Company Limited, which is a major life insurance organisation in Nigeria. He was educated in Insurance in the U.K. and is an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute of U.K. He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria, of which he was the first Charter President. In addition to practicing, he has lectured widely in the subject of insurance in Nigeria.
Mr. A.A. Elebute is Partner and Head of Financial Advisory Services of KPMG Professional Nigeria, with responsibility for Corporate Finance, Transaction and Privatisation Services. He holds a BA (Econ) from the University of Manchester, UK (1982) and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (“ICAN”). He attended the Advanced Management Programme at the Lagos Business School in 1996. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of Society for Family Health (“SFH”), the largest NGO in the country that provides HIV and AIDS prevention services and products. He is also a member of the Governing Council of the Grange School, Lagos.
Mrs. Fola Laoye is the Group Managing Director. She is a graduate of University of Lagos (BSc Accounting, 1990) and qualified as an Associate member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales in 1995 and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria in 1997. She trained with Coopers & Lybrand, UK (now PriceWaterHouseCoopers) from 1991 to 1995 and worked with the Corporate Finance Unit of First Securities Discount House (“FSDH”) from 1995 to 1997. She holds a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School, U.S.A. and teaches (part-time) Strategy at Lagos Business School (now Pan-African university). She has been instrumental in charting the growth strategy of Hygeia for several years.
Dr. Kunle Onakoya is Medical Director of Lagoon Hospitals and a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon. He holds an MBBS and FWACS. He joined Lagoon Hospital as a medical officer in 1986. He then went for post-graduate training in orthopaedic surgery at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi and at St. George’s Hospital London. He returned to Lagoon Hospital as a full-time consultant in 1996. Currently, he is the Medical Director/Chief Executive Officer of Lagoon Hospital Apapa.
Mr. Onno Schellekens is Managing Director of PharmAccess Foundation. Onno Schellekens is founder of the Health Insurance Fund. The Health Insurance Fund (HIF), established in 2005, aims to introduce medical insurance schemes for low- and no-income groups and through private healthcare providers in Africa. In 2006 the HIF received a grant of EUR 100 million from the Dutch government. In 2006 the HIF launched its first programme in Nigeria. Onno Schellekens holds a master degree from the School of Management and Organisation of the University Groningen, The Netherlands. He attended the Insead Asia Executive Course in 1996.
Mr. Barend van der Vorm manages a portfolio of private equity investments, and from time to time, acts as member of the supervisory board. He is an active member of the Investment Committee of a private equity fund (IFHA) which invests in the healthcare sector in Africa. He founded CentreCourt in Monaco which supports high-growth companies and develops entrepreneurial strategy. Mr. van der Vorm is a co-founder and president of the Monaco Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (MVCA). He serves as Honorary Consul General of the Netherlands to Monaco.
Mr. David Awoniyi is a Chartered Architect, practising in Lagos.
