The Hygeia Community Health Plan was formally launched in January 2007. The launch process commenced with a Presidential briefing on the 25th of January 2007, to then Head of State, President Olusegun Obasanjo, following which launch events were held in the two pilot States of Lagos and Kwara.

In Lagos State the launch was held on the 26th of January 2007 at the Glover Memorial Hall, Lagos Island, while it was launched in Kwara State on the 27th of January 2007 at the Shonga Community Square. Two years later, on the 22nd of April 2009 the scheme was launched in Lafiagi community as an extension of the initial Shonga scheme. The extension of the scheme to Lafiagi was in response to the demands of the community who had heard about the impact of the scheme on the health system and socio-economic milieu of Shonga and Bacita communities.
