Testimonies

Several individuals who have benefited from the HCHP Programme have applauded the scheme managers and have acknowledged the impact of the scheme on the quality of their lives. These beneficiaries include members of the Shonga community, Lagos market women and medical directors of the participating hospitals.

A few of these testimonies are included below:

ATTAHIRU AISHETU is immensely grateful to the HCHP for ensuring speedy access to emergency obstetrics services when she fell into labour 10 months ago. She had obstructed labour and she was referred to Ogo Oluwa Hospital, Bacita where she was successfully delivered of a baby boy through emergency caesarean surgery. Interestingly her neigbours subsequently christened the boy, “Hygeia” and Aishetu is referred to as “Mama Hygeia”. Aishetu remarked that the HCHP saved her family from the financial distress that may have resulted from borrowing money to pay out-of-pocket for the caesarean surgery. Her family members were surprised when they were told that they did not have to raise money to cater for her medical treatment, this motivated several of them to enroll into the HCHP scheme.

LADAN AISHAT is a known hypertensive she acknowledges that the HCHP scheme has ensured that she receives appropriate routine medical care and her anti-hypertensives without paying out-of-pocket. Prior to the commencement of the HCHP scheme she was not compliant with the prescribed medications due to the exorbitant costs but now the scheme provides access to routine physician evaluations and drug re-fills at her primary care provider; Shonga Comprehensive Health Centre. Hajia Aishat was recently admitted at the Shonga health centre on account of severe hypertension she told us she could not believe it when she was told she did not have to pay a single kobo for the care received. She also commented that the doctor and nurses were also available to provide appropriate care during her admission.

HAJIA AYINKE SAKA, the Kwara State Commissioner for health acknowledged the Shonga community health insurance scheme as a dream come true. She remarked that the scheme has changed the disposition of rural people towards orthodox medicine and has given Kwara State an excellent global image in the world health concerns. She did not fail to reiterate his excellency’s (Dr Bukola Saraki) goodwill and the unflinching support of the Ministry of Health towards the continuing success of the scheme in Shonga and the state as a whole.

Mr EZIDIEGUN CHINEDU narrated his story. "My wife gave birth through caesarean section at Lagoon hospital, and the operation was successful. My wife and our new born baby are healthy and doing fine.
During the pregnancy stage I did not envisage that my wife will not give birth through the normal process. So I did not prepare for the huge cost implication, and with the fact that I subscribed to CAPDAN/ COMPUTER VILLAGE health insurance I was less worried.
With the health insurance, my wife enjoyed the following services: free caesarean section, free drugs, and free admission. Above all, the scheme saved my wife's and baby's lives at no additional cost".

SANNI BILIKIS also told her own story. "I gave birth to a bouncing baby at Lagoon Hospital. With the help of International donors and HCHP, I did make any deposit at the hospital and when it was time to go home with my baby Lagoon hospital did not request for any money.
I am very glad. Though, initially, I found the scheme too good to be true. But with testimonies from others shop owners in computer village; afterwards I was convinced it is not one of the scams around".

MRS. ROSE EJIDIKE, a shop owner at Canaan plaza, 1, Adepele Street, Computer Village, was diagnosed with hernia in November, 2010. And according to the doctor, she needed conventional hernia-repair surgery (called herniorrhaphy).
Since she is a member of CAPDAN/ COMPUTER VILLAGE health insurance plan, the surgery was performed at Lagoon Hospital at no cost.
After the surgery she found the free health care from World Bank and Hygeia Community Health plan unbelievable. She was full of profound gratitude to international donors for saving her life with little co-premium of N1,450 she contributed as a subscriber.

PETER BLESSING was involved in a bike accident within Ikeja environment and he was immediately rushed to Lagoon Hospital Ikeja. While at the hospital, she presented his HCHP ID card.
"Without any delay, I was treated without paying medical bill. As an eligible member of the scheme, if I have not subscribed to the health insurance, my business will have suffered the cost. I would have been forced to pay my medical bill from my business capital or proceeds".
