Kwara State is one of the 36 states of Nigeria located in the North central geo-political zone and its capital is Ilorin. The state is made up of 16 Local Government Areas and it covers an area of 36,825 km². Kwara State has an estimated population of 2,371,089 from the 2006 National population census. Providing good quality and easily accessible healthcare is high on the priority of the State Government. In this regard, a high priority has been given to the initiative to collaborate with the HCHP and the international donor community to obtain funding for the sustainability of primary care delivery through a system of community health insurance. In line with its policy thrusts and strategies the Kwara State Government contributed to the start-up of the Scheme by undertaking to upgrade existing primary care facilities in the State commencing with the Shonga Comprehensive Health Centre. The State government has continually supported the community health insurance scheme and very recently committed to co-financing the premiums for 71,000 low income individuals in Afon district of Asa LGA.
